Itinerary

From Larouche to Saguenay (Jonquière)

  • Start at Larouche City Hall. Walk down to the Larouche church. Turn right onto Gauthier Street and continue to Route 170. (1.75 km)
  • Take the divided highway 170 eastbound, on your right. (0.6 km)
  • Intersection of Route 170 (divided highway) and the exit leading to Boulevard du Royaume. Stay in the right lane at the exit that takes you under the overpass. (10.4 km)
  • This is the first section of Boulevard du Royaume. (2 km)
  • At the next intersection, leave Boulevard du Royaume, which turns left, and turn right onto Boulevard Harvey. Continue straight on Boulevard Harvey to enter the city. (2 km)
  • You’ll come to Rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste (there’s a guesthouse on the left at number 2190); further on, cross the Rivière-aux-Sables via the bridge, and you’ll reach the cross street: Rue Saint-Dominique. Turn right onto this street. There are three (3) guesthouses nearby. See accommodations below. (1 km)
  • To get to the Oasis de la Rivière-aux-sables bed-and-breakfast: from Rue Saint-Dominique Ouest, which is on your right, turn right again onto Rue Ouellet (0.1 km); at the end of the street, turn left onto Rue de la Rivière-aux-sables and look for number 2349.

Rivière-aux-Sables Park and Promenade

Take a stroll along the Rivière aux Sables. A bridge built in 1950, offering a lovely view of the Shipshaw River, leads a little further on to the Saguenay Fjord.

Jonquière

The parish of Jonquière, an agricultural community, was established in 1847, and three years later, the township of the same name was created. The name honors Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel de la Jonquière, a governor of New France (1749–1752). The village’s development accelerated, leading to its incorporation as the City of Jonquière in 1900, spurred by the establishment of a pulp mill, followed by a paper mill under William Price, and later an aluminum smelter nearby.

The year 1912 marked a turning point: Jonquière was recognized as the largest producer of newsprint in Quebec and Canada. All in all, it is a city closely tied to the economy.
